Ana Climent, Heritage peanut seeds guardian
Every spring, she plants heritage peanut seeds her family has kept alive for more than a century. Each generation saved it and planted it again, and now it is in her hands.
It is cacau del collaret, a small native Valencian peanut, grown next to cacaua, another old local type. They grow slowly and give less than modern peanuts, so the market almost let them disappear. The Climent family kept planting them anyway.
Ana farms with her father, Eduardo, on the family land in La Granja de la Costera, inland in Valencia province. They do every step themselves. They sow in late spring. In summer the plants open small yellow flowers, and then something surprising happens. After flowering, each stem bends down and pushes into the earth, and the peanut grows underground.
In late autumn the whole harvest is pulled out by hand. The peanuts dry slowly in the loft and are roasted in small batches, only when someone orders them. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is handed to anyone else.
We have a treasure in these seeds. They survived because my father never stopped growing them.
Every seed Ana keeps holds a piece of her family's memory and a piece of the region's biodiversity. A variety like this lives only as long as someone plants it. When the last family stops, it is gone for good.
Come in late autumn, when the plants come out of the ground. Or start with the film, and see why this family never let go.
